Majors and Minors

Last week I wanted to be  a Liberal Arts major, with a minor in Family and Child Development.

This week I want to be a Family and Child Development major, and minor in Early Childhood Education.

They say, "Career opportunities available for early childhood education minors include preschool director, preschool teacher or aide and public school aide. Early childhood education enriches the skills of those who become involved in their communities or religious volunteer organizations. Students will not attain a teaching certificate upon completion of this minor, but early childhood education is an option for those who may be considering entering the field."  So that's good, right?   I don't want to be a grade school teacher. But I could do preschool.  I think.

Don't tell me, "Ohh, Mary you have plenty of time to think about this..."

I like planning.

What did you want to do with your LA major? I think that either option sounds great, but keep your eyes and your heart open. Take lots of different classes and you may find something else you like. I know you want to plan and need to kind of know where you are going, but college students change their minds all of the time! You have a fantastic brain and a huge heart so just keep your options open. I am sure this doesn't help too much, just keep your options open. :)

Ok, there are lots of things to consider. First, what is your "goal" as of now in getting a degree. I say "as of now" because this is what is most likely to change. For instance, is it to be "educated"? Is it to be qualified for a certain job, or to be better qualified for any number of jobs? Is it to better prepare you for being a mom? Is it to expose yourself to a broad base of academics with the idea that you will continue to graduate school in a more focused area? See my point? I need more info. If you could rank your "as of now" goals please, then I will comment further.

So...if I had to do it all over again, I would stick to liberal arts. Let me tell you why:
I went from being a music major, then to an psychology major, then to and early childhood ed. major, then and education major then a Spanish major and finally, at age 25, I realized that I finally, really, truly and most definitely wanted to be an English major. I was a master of none...which, to this day haunts me. I should have just gotten my LA stuff all completed and done and then moved along.

Now, I'm not saying that you are me...you are a far better student and far more focused...I'm just saying that, at the end of the day...why declare? I mean...if you want to, that's great...but, why?

And so goes my opinion.
Love you!

Flunk out.
Give up.
That's my advice.

Well, you've had only a few days of school, so give yourself a little time. Get your Gen Ed classes out of the way. But I like your second idea: family and child development major. I think maybe you and that major should try dating for a while, nothing serious. Then if you like each other, you could talk about marriage.

FORGET ABOUT LIBERAL ARTS! That is just for people who end up working at McDonald's or as a secretary!

Working is really just a means to an end--retirement. So, if you have to work, you should be as marketable as possible in order to get the most money as possible so that you can retire as early as possible and enjoy life!!!

This is wholly my opinion. I feel that their are two types of people in this world...people who are passionate about their work and those who could care less. If you are passionate about teaching preschoolers, then go for it and enjoy life...if you are not and it is just "something to do", forget about it! Go get a business degree and start earning big bucks and putting away for retirement.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have gone into Entrepreneurial Studies (since I didn't have a high enough GPA to be an accountant) and started my own business.

Basically my thoughts are that the majority of people hate to go to work, but do it in order to survive. If you are not passionate about something, then figure out which job will pay you the most, that you can stomach the longest, so that you can retire as early as possible.

Good luck to you and you are a saint for wanting to teach preschoolers (especially if you end up in a public school system). I think all teachers should be sainted.

Loves to you!

Good to have a plan--good to stick to it until you change your mind. Good to go to college and have fun and move people's unmentionables out of the dryer into a laundry basket. Even better to leave a funny note. So far....well......so good!
